Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR/BLS) Certification Training

The American Heart Association BLS/CPR for Healthcare Provider Certification Course is designed for healthcare professionals who need training on how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

CPR/BLS Course content includes:

  • Key changes in basic life support, reflecting the most current science from the American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
  • Critical concepts of high-quality CPR
  • The American Heart Association Chain of Survival
  • 1-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant
  • 2-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant
  • Differences between adult, child and infant rescue techniques
  • Bag-mask techniques for adult, child and infant
  • Rescue breathing for adult, child and infant
  • Relief of choking for adult, child and infant
  • CPR with an advanced airway*

* This is an introduction to the compression/ventilation rate and ratio for a patient who has an advanced airway in place.

Who should take this course?

Healthcare providers that are typically required to take this course are physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, physician's assistants, residents or fellows, or medical or nursing students in training, aides, medical or nursing assistants, police officers, and other allied health personnel.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course material, do not represent income to the Association.

If you have previously claimed an eCard, it can be found by visiting www.heart.org/cpr/mycards. Under the section titled "Students," input your name and email address OR your eCard credential ID, and then click "Search." You will be prompted to enter the answer to the security question you created upon claiming your eCard.

These two courses and types of cards are equivalent. In February 2016, AHA changed the title of the course from "BLS for Healthcare Providers" to "BLS Provider." The "BLS for Healthcare Providers" course references curriculum from guidelines published in 2010 (and previously). The "BLS Provider" course references curriculum from guidelines published in 2015. This update also changed the title on the student manual and the credential card issued after class. "BLS for Healthcare Providers" cards were discontinued by AHA on 04/15/2016. Any courses taught with the 2015 science will result in a "BLS Provider" credential card.

The BLS Provider Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The course is intended for certified or noncertified, licensed or nonlicensed healthcare professionals.

Cascade is an authorized Training Center by the American Heart Association in all 50 states to provide BLS training. (AHA TC: WA15590)

The BLS Provider course requires approximately 3-4 hours to complete, including skills practice and skills testing.

Upon successful course completion, including demonstration of skills competency and passing the required skills tests and a written test, students receive an official American Heart Association BLS Provider course completion card, valid for two years. In February 2016, AHA changed the title of the course from BLS for Healthcare Providers to BLS Provider. This also changed the title on the credential card issued after class. BLS for Healthcare Providers cards were discontinued by AHA on 04/15/2016. These two types of cards are equivalent.

The minimum passing score for the written test is 84%.
