Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

NRP Courses Details

Curriculum Provider: American Academy of Pediatrics
Certification Duration: 2 Years
Course Format: After completion of online course: Small Group Learning Stations & Practical Testing Scenarios

The Neonatal Resuscitation Programâ„¢ is an educational training course that introduces the concepts and basic skills of neonatal resuscitation. Completion of the program does not imply that an individual has the competence to perform neonatal resuscitation. Each hospital is responsible for determining the level of competence and qualifications required for someone to assume clinical responsibility for neonatal resuscitation.

NRP Training Course Process:

This is a two-part course that is open to all new, expired, or current NRP card holders.

Prestudy: The Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation (8th edition) is available for purchase during your course registration. Many students who work in labor and delivery, NICU, or neonatology will find that they are already very familiar with the NRP Guidelines and do not need to spend as much time in self-study. However, if this material is new or unfamiliar, the new 8th edition Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation is the most valuable resource to prepare for the online exam and the classroom portion of the course.

Part 1, Online Learning Assessment and Exam: The first part of the NRP course is the NRP learning assessment, online exam, and the course survey. There are no longer eSim cases. Prior to attending Part 2 of the course a student MUST successfully complete all three portions of Part 1, the online learning assessment, online exam, and the course survey. NRP Part 1 is available for purchase during course registration (the material is named "8th Edition NRP Online Exam"). After you purchase the exam, instructions on how to create your NRP account will be emailed to you within 3 business days. These instructions will include information on how to access your online exam.

Part 2, Instructor-Led Event: The second part of the course is the mandatory classroom portion including demonstration, hands-on practice, skills evaluation, simulation, and debriefing. On the day of your classroom session, an instructor will demonstrate the skills and be available to coach you before testing begins. You must successfully pass all portions of the required NRP Online Exam before participating in the classroom portion of the course. You will be expected to demonstrate neonatal resuscitation skills and participate in a team resuscitation and debriefing. Successful completion of the online learning assessment, online exam, and skills demonstration will result in an American Academy of Pediatrics NRP certification card valid for two years.

NRP Class Frequently Asked Questions

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is an educational program jointly sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Heart Association (AHA). The course has been designed to teach an evidence-based approach to resuscitation of the newborn to hospital staff who care for newborns at the time of delivery, including physicians, nurses and respiratory therapists. Since the inception of the NRP in 1987, over 3 million individuals in the United States and a countless number of individuals abroad have been trained in NRP.

Yes. The NRP credentialing process is a two-step process. You must complete the online program and testing to then attend the second step of the process which includes focused learning and evaluation stations.
